Reading Roundup: December 11th, 2018

Each week, we'll be posting the content that caught our team's eye on the internet. Staying current is one of the most fun parts of our job, and we love to share the industry news that made it to our Slack channel or water cooler. Get your reading on! This week, we're talking Pilotworks re-opening, top grocery trends, and an app that traces foodborne illness outbreaks.

Here's a rundown:

Boston-based food lab to reopen Pilotworks (Food Dive)

Just two months after Pilotworks closed its doors with no notice to its members, the facility is being re-opened. Boston-based R&D lab Chew, run by Adam Melonas, will open under the name Nursery. The 175 displaced makers will be invited back, though it's unclear how many will want to return to the space. Melonas, who founded the now-shuttered candy company Unreal, is a self-described "Willy Wonka." Hmm.

Kroger's Top Food Trends for 2019 (Kroger)

It's food trend release season! Kroger's five trends aren't ground-breaking, but do indicate where grocers and buyers will be focusing their attention next year. Gut health products, natural sweeteners, and "eating styles" (encompassing anything from paleo to veganism) are all leading the way. Sounds like another year of health and wellness!

iwaspoisoned.com app gives the public and public health officials new tools (Food Safety News)

A new app from a former stock broker is crowdsourcing data about foodborne illness outbreaks. Iwaspoisoned, an app and web platform, compiles data on food poisoning of all types, which is carefully vetted by administrators. The data has been used to successfully identify outbreaks and aid public health agencies. Yet another reason to be extra-careful about food safety!
