Mothers. Where do we even begin to express our gratitude and appreciation for the work they do? While they should be celebrated EVERY day of the year, Mother’s Day is the one day we collectively honor the work they do. We at Foodboro are doing our part by recognizing 10 food and beverage brands founded by badass female entrepreneurs and mothers, because as if being a mother wasn’t a full-time job in and of itself.
After her oldest son was diagnosed with autism Jennifer started to look at food as medicine, and saw the benefits of a diet free of gluten. Not being able to find products that fit her unique needs (and tastes), she and her mother took to the kitchen to develop gluten-free versions of her son’s favorite foods. Co-founders Christine and Michael began Oomph after seeking a healthy, innovative shortcut for their daughter's restrictive diet. They realized they could elevate home-cooked meals, but still pack nutritional power, with their organic herbs and vegetables blends. Oomph Cooking Blends can be bought online through their website. When Josie Johnson had to eliminate gluten from her diet, the foods she missed the most were pancakes at Sunday breakfast. So she set out to create her own gluten-free pancake mix that wasn’t just good for the gluten-free folks but good enough for folks who didn’t have gluten allergies. Now she’s grown Josie’s Best Gluten-Free Mixes from pancake mixes to waffles, muffins and crepes.
After her son was diagnosed with autism in 2006, Shelley Schulz reevaluated her family’s diet, ultimately removing grains, dairy and processed foods. Later, in 2007, her husband was diagnosed with cancer. With this, Shelley dug deeper into nutrition and started creating her own nutrient-dense, healthy snacks. Healing Home Foods was launched from her home kitchen in 2010 and has since grown to national distribution.
Founded by two moms, Maggie Patton and Alexandra Buckley, Bitsy’s was created to make eating vegetables more fun. Kid-tested and kid-approved, Bitsy’s first snacks were launched in 2009 and today includes a host of snacks from crackers to cookies. Read more about the Bitsy story on Forbes.
Founder Patter Gersuk started Patterbar in an effort of creating a snack bar option for her children with ingredients that she could trust. Positive feedback from friends and family motivated Patter to launch the company in 2018, and today they sell a variety of flavors like Coconut Cashew and Blueberry Lemon. Denise Woodards set out to create healthy, allergy-friendly snacks after she realized her daughter, Vivienne, had several food allergies and sensitivities. Launched in 2016, Partake’s products include a unique line of gluten free, allergy-approved cookies.
Jessica Alba founded Honest after not being able to find one diaper brand with materials she could trust. She was inspired by the birth of her first daughter, Honor, in 2008 to start the company, which launched in 2012 with 17 products. Today Honest sells a range of products from baby food to beauty.
Prior to starting Caulipower, Gail Becker had a secure position as a top executive for a marketing firm. It was in 2016 when she took the leap and dove headfirst into the world of entrepreneurship. Having two teenage sons who were diagnosed with celiac disease at a young age, Caulipower was founded with the core mission of creating better-for-you gluten free products. Today the company sells a variety of veggie-based products including cauliflower rice bowls, cauliflower crust pizzas, and even cauliflower crusted chicken tenders.
