What is Lemon8 and what does it mean for food & beverage brands?

TikTok parent company ByteDance is pushing a lifestyle app similar to Instagram and Pinterest in Western social media markets. Here's how CPG brands should be using it.

What is Lemon8 and what does it mean for food & beverage brands?

When life gives you lemons you make... a new social networking app? While Lemon8 is not new; it IS new to US social media users. Lemon8 is a video and photo-sharing social media platform catering to users' interest in food, beauty, wellness, and travel (similar to Instagram and Pinterest).

Side note: does anyone remember the Path app? Major flashbacks to 2010.

What is Lemon8?

Lemon8 is a phot and video-sharing platform that is different from TikTok in that it doesn't support vertical video scrolling. Right now the primary topics are food, fashion, beauty, wellness and travel. The app allows users to like, comment, share and save posts... many of which have longer form captions and use hashtags.

What's it like for creators?

From ZDNET: "For now, it seems that big-name creators with millions of social media followers haven't migrated to Lemon8. That could be for a few reasons: Lemon8 won't formally launch in the US until May. The Lemon8 app is currently available for download, but maybe top creators are gearing up for the official launch.

Another reason popular creators aren't on Lemon8 could be that it's unclear how creators can monetize their content on the app. Marketers could be hesitant to invest in Lemon8 because of its ties to ByteDance and the volatile relationship the company has with the US government."

How can food & beverage brands use the app?

Like Instagram and TikTok, food & beverage brands can utilize the platform to share their products, recipes, user generated content, and build community.

Lemon8 users are posting about Olipop
Prebiotic soda brand Poppi is on the app.

Our take?

So, whether or not Lemon8 dominates the U.S. market is to be seen. Our advice? Get your brand on the app. Register your brand's username, play around with posting. It doesn't hurt to have a presence!
