Reading Roundup: January 15th, 2019

It's been a particularly frosty week, so it's a perfect time to catch up on news and readings. This week, we're looking at the bad, the big, and the branded. The government shutdown is affecting our food safety, Chobani has entered the plant-based market, and a CPG company is the first to use a LGBT seal on their packaging. Don't miss our favorites from this week!

Here's a rundown:

How is the government shutdown impacting the food industry? (Food Dive)

The longest-running shutdown in government history is affecting our food. USDA data is delayed, affecting market prices and farmers' decision making. The shutdown has also closed many FDA and USDA district offices, which means lessened food safety inspections. Isn't that reassuring? As Stephen Colbert joked, it's a great time to get all your questionable food products on the market.

Chobani looks beyond yogurt with its first plant-based product (CNN)

It's not surprising that Chobani would want into the plant-based dairy game. What is surprising - and innovative - is that they aren't using the word "yogurt" at all. Their new line of "Non-Dairy Chobani" relies on brand name recognition alone to instruct consumers. It's a smart move, as the fight over words like "milk" continues. Their non-dairy alternative is part of 30 new SKUs the company is releasing this winter. A bold move, but it may pay off.

This Chocolate Brand Is The First To Feature A New LGBT Seal (Forbes)

Fair Trade, Non-GMO, Organic, LGBT-friendly? Look out for the label next time you shop. Chocolate company Five North is the first CPG company to feature the Certified LGBT Business Enterprise seal. The seal is administered by the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and businesses must be 51% LGBT owned and operated in order to apply. In an era when consumers are shopping according to their values and demanding transparency, this seal makes perfect sense. Yay for socially-driven businesses!
